We are at least as wrong in our assumptions about god as we are in our assumptions about each other. Religion is to the idea of god what racism is to the idea of race, in other words. And the "god" of those religions is only as real as race itself.
Although we admit we are flawed and fallible in everything else, we likewise insist that we are absolutely correct in our beliefs about a god who is infinitely more complex than we are, but no one has ever actually met in person.
Hence we do not worship at the altar of a god, we worship our own hubris at the altar of our assumptions about god.
Religion assumes that while billions of people can be wrong about everything else, they are all inerrant when it comes to God. It is, in short, the contending attempts by earthly religious powers to colonize our minds.
