The thing we are almost always the most afraid of is ourselves, which we just as often take out on others, and come up with religions that make it a moral obligation for us do so - for God.
If physical science is a way of studying the psychology of God, as Spinoza saw it, than religion is the worship of the psychopathy of man.
In the beginning, animal sacrifice was a way for men to menstruate for their gods. Today, that same sacrifice comes in the form of war.
Violence is often simply a physical manifestation of as much fear and hatred as politics and religions can create, instill, and justify.
Religion is the opposite of objectivism, and the worship of relativism. And theology is a way  of rationalizing the latter into the former.
Transcendence, enlightenment, and the discovery of truth, have never been achieved through worship, conformity, or obedience. Indeed, the latter are “intelligently designed” by men and practiced as virtues through religio to prevent the former.
Religion teaches you to believe you know God because you believe in God, and that believing in God is the same thing as “knowing” God. And the only way to know and love that God, is to love and obey your religion.
The one person most people never learn how to truly forgive is the same one they live with every second of everyday of their life - them self.
Religion teaches people to believe that defending the honor of their own ego in the name of what we simply chose to "believe" is true, despite any Everest of evidence which says otherwise, is the same thing as finding truth.
Religion teaches people that they have free will but that they must surrender that will entirely to God, even unto martyrdom if need be, to save themselves from being roasted alive for all eternity.
Original sin is the sin of seeking to know more about God, which today is the very thing religion tells us we must devote our lives to seeking to avoid by punished by God for failing to do so, even though our limitations prevent us from not only ever achieving any real knowledge of God, but from ever agreeing about whatever knowledge we think we do find.
I can think of no greater act of hubris or insanity than that for a person to feed themselves to lions rather than consider that they could possibly be wrong.
The miracle of religion is that it teaches people they can understand the infinite intelligence of an omnipotent being better than everyone else, by simply believing they do. And the only thing more inscrutable to such an "omnipotent intelligence" than such a blatant act of human hubris is the insistence that it is the greatest act of humility a "true believer" can engage in.
Love is about finding someone who is broken in all the same ways that you are, and then using that knowledge as either a balm or a bull whip, to care for or to crucify.  Most people seem to prefer the latter.
Religion is the divine claim that our ideas of right and wrong must forever remain imprisoned within a stable like the one Jesus was allegedly born in, which calls this limitation the infallible truth of natural law, even though Darwin’s theory of evolution illustrates that this is the very opposite of how nature itself works with everything from geology to genetics, and even astro to quantum physics.
Christians deny the validity of relativism, even though their ideas of miracles, resurrection, and the forgiveness of sins, all mean that everything is relative to God.
The difference between the atheist and the theist can be thought of  as the difference between those who belive in the existence of simply the brain from which the mind is merely an extension and those who belive in the existence of a mind that choose to create all brains, human or other.
